Benefit For A Monkey

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

Do you realize how weird it is to advertise a fundraiser for yourself? It’s damn weird. The Monkey’s Uncle show on Monday, May 12th is now going to be a financial helper to pay some of my medical bills and be a showcase to see male Monkeys getting their heads shaved.

First, I want to thank everyone who has offered support, comfort and especially laughs during this period. I’ve felt truly blessed at having such a strong virtually- and reality-based support group. The Monkeys I especially want to thank for their huge hearts at even offering to do this upcoming comedy benefit — like I had a choice actually.

It’s been suggested strongly that I put a link for donations for those who want to and won’t be able to see the show although I’m hearing rumors that the show may be taped, so if you are so inclined…

And for no reason at all, here is something for you. It’s the new Monkey Mix that we put together for the show.

Upgrade Available For Robot Mix

PulsarsI just can’t leave this mix alone. It’s my favorite of the concept mixes, so seem to always find things I don’t like about it to fix. This time it’s because I rediscovered a favorite album of mine — Pulsars’ one and only full-length collection of music. On the same label as Garbage, Pulsars were supposed to be this band that brought back the electronic fun of the 80’s back to the airwaves, but the label went under and the new owners decided not to pick them up. All this is standard fare in the music industry, of course, but it’s also sad. The debut album was really good.

I found it again and realized that there were several songs not in my iTunes library including “My Pet Robot” which is now included in v1.6 of the mix. It does a great job of flow between ELO and They Might Be Giants. The other good news is that Pulsars is finally going to start recording again after working for a decade producing other bands like OK Go. If I may… SQUEAL!

UPDATE: Yeah, I just tweaked it again. I wasn’t happy with the sound effect of the UFO’s door opening before “Mr. Roboto” kicks in, so that’s been changed.

Verb Away: Another Web Pen Blog Concept Mix

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

Fractured heartDear Valentine’s Day,

Words can never say what music can when it comes to the mysterious and strangely bipolar sailings of my heart, so I’ve made you a special music mix to let the world know how I feel about you, Valentine’s Day. The concept is easy. All the songs must have titles that meet this criteria: “*verb* Away”. This lends itself to an extremely eclectic mix of music: Lenny Kravtiz and Nirvana to Will To Power and Culture Club to Art Garfunkel and Christopher Cross. In fact, the Christopher Cross song was the one used the Hawaii episodes of “Growing Pains” — such guilty pleasures.

Don’t be hurt, Valentine’s Day, by song titles such as “Go Away”, “Fly Away”, “Stay Away”, and “Blow Away” — just go away.

Monkey’s Uncle Music Mix 2008.1

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

MU

Every two months, the members of Monkey’s Uncle put together a mix of music for ourselves and to play before the show starts. They always turn out extremely eclectic and fun. The first one of 2008 is no exception. There is it down there to listen to if you so choose — either on the blog or on Web Pen Blog Radio.

In the meantime, we have a show this Monday at Jazz@Jack’s. Our special guest will be Jeff Chacon of Rodents Of Unusual Size. We even have an opening act: The Mathematically Challenged Quartet, which consists of Jeff and his good friend Floyd. They write some damn funny songs and will go on around 7:15. We then go on around 7:30 for some improvisational comedy goodness. Join us if you can, won’t you?
