Radio Theater Pilot II

Friday, June 16th, 2006

Just got back from the recording session of Radio Avenue and must say that it was incredibly fun. There were so many of Denver’s most talented comedians there just putting on a great show, and the gay marriage rant went over much better than I thought and it received some huge laughs. Now Dave gets to edit it all night and deliver it to KGNU for broadcast this afternoon. Tune in!

Broadcast Details:
Friday, June 16
Approximately 12:15 - 1:00p.m. MST
KGNU Boulder, 88.5 FM
KGNU Denver, 1390 AM

Radio Theater Pilot

"Howard here with more Avenue Theater news"

After doing the Carol Channing bit last night at Oddville, I found out that the theater wants me to rant. By the way, can I say that Carol killed last night? It’s one thing to perform that commercial skit in front of a group that is mostly friends, but to have made an audience of about 40 strangers scream with laughter made me feel so good. Last night was a strong reminder of why I love to make people laugh.

And now tonight, Bob & Dave are creating a pilot radio show that KGNU is going to air Friday afternoon. It’s going to be an old-fashioned variety comedy show focusing mostly on current events with skits, songs, news reports and rants. I’m going to rant. For 90 seconds, I get to stand (I hope literally) on a soap box and go off about something, so I’ve decided to use my Gay Marriage Is Good For The Economy post. I just have to edited it down to 90 seconds. I knew this blog was good for something.

If you are in the Denver area, you are cordially invited to attend the free taping (it starts at 10pm) because they want an audience there to respond just like a real live studio audience because, uh, you will be a live studio audience — only taped for playback later. Go to their website for all the details.

And if you’re waffling about going, let me say two words to change your mind: FREE COFFEE!
Oh, right. Addmission is free, too.

Carol Channing Returns To Denver

Tuesday, June 13th, 2006

Well, in spirit anyway. If you are in the Denver area, stop by to see a very fun show called Oddville tomorrow (June 14) at the Avenue Theater (417 E. 17th) where anyone who has something interesting, funny or weird to say can take 3 - 10 minutes to do it.

I did it back in April with my cynical dating rules blog monologue (yes, it’s the new trend — Blog Readings) with a prop comic and a guy trying to break into stand-up. The newbie was really good, but the prop comic won the audience $25 prize because he had stacked the crowd. And after trying to take myself out of the randomly drawn $25 award and a wrong-name-in-the-hat snafu, the newbie won the money and I felt good about myself.

Now I’m doing it again to promote the next Monkey’s Uncle (it’s on June 19th at Jazz@Jack’s just in case you are wondering. And I know you are). I’m performing my Carol Channing Carol Bangs ‘Em Off commercial skit where I perform — as Carol — modern and classic rock, pop, R&B and hip-hop hits with my friend, Aaron, doing his fantastic TV ad announcer guy voice to promote the album. The skit’s been a big hit at the MU shows, so it’ll be fun to perform it elsewhere and see how it plays.

Yes, that picture is me doing it a couple of years ago at a show. And, yes, I know the wig isn’t big enough nor is it completely white, but, hey, I’m on a limited budget here! If I win one of the $25 awards, I’ll use it to get a real imitation Carol Channing wig. How’s that? I’m going to need it because I have ideas for the third and fourth in this skit series — a duets collection and famous Oscar-winning songs. Leslie wants to hear "Into The West" from Return Of The King done by Carol: "Wwwhyyy dooo the whiiite gulls cawaaaaaaaalllll"

Yeah, I can’t wait either.
