One Sentence Review: Naruto The Movie: Ninja Clash in the Land of Snow

It had lots of snow, some clash and the most boring villains ever.

One Sentence Review: Surf’s Up

Holy crap, it’s good mostly because the documentary style lessens the sentiment and heightens the humor.

NarutoIt’s about time that I came out of the anime closet. My friends all know that I love animation, but haven’t been much involved with the Japanese art form until recently. Oh, I’ve seen everything done by Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle), but it was only recently that I’ve been getting into Japanese shows like “Bleach“, “One Piece” and the wonderfully weird, “Bobobo-Bo Bo-Bobo“. It’s to the point that I’ve even started to read manga like “Shaman King” and subscribed to Shonen Jump magazine. Yes, I’ve rediscovered my love of comic books, but this time they are from a different country!

However, there is one that I love above all else — “Naruto“.

Every Saturday, Tivo is catching the latest episode on Cartoon Network and even though the storyline is further ahead on the anime than the manga in the US, I still grab all the new books and look forward to seeing the differences between the anime and manga when the new Shonen Jump arrives each month. Yeah, I’m a queek (queer + geek). Let me tell you the details.

No, there is too much. Let me sum up.

It’s the adventures of a bunch of kids who are training to be ninjas. That in no way gives you any idea of the complexity of the story, but suffice it to say that I’m invested in this relationship. Don’t tell Cameron. Eh, actually he knows already and is cool with it, but I digress.

Why am I going on and on about it? Because tonight Shari (of Monkey’s Uncle fame) and I are meeting other geeks (I have a date with a girl! heh-heh *snort*) to see Naruto The Movie: Ninja Clash In The Land Of Snow! BELIEVE IT! It is only being shown once around the US in select theaters at 7:00 local time. I’m so excited because I’ve been working on my own ninja skills.

Behold! I have mastered a new jutsu!

Master a new jutsu
“Shadow Clone Jutsu!”

Many Howards
“C’mon! Do summin’!”

Yeah, I know. Instead of having awesomely massive ninja skills, I really should be figuring out how to use Photoshop. And yes, I’m wearing a Leaf Village ball cap and Kakashi t-shirt to the movie. Jealous? You should be since you won’t have hot ninja sensei on your chest like me.

…Kakashi-sensei…. *drool*

And don’t ask me to do that jutsu in public because I won’t.

I’m shy.

I thought a Star Wars reference was appropriate in relaying this sad news about “The Venture Bros.” It seems that the voice of Dr. Venture — James Urbaniak — is moving to L.A. to attempt to further his career and is leaving the show behind. According to his personal blog, James says his replacement will be Liev Schreiber. Now I like Liev, he’s a fine actor and VERY easy on the eye, IF you know what I mean, but James gave this perfect balance of barely-contained hysteria, sleeze and geek swagger to the role of Dr. Rusty Venture. Yes, I will give Liev the benefit of the doubt.

James, good luck in your career in L.A. Here’s wishing you the best. You will be missed.

…poo.
