Lazy Tuesday - Songs Of Mass Destruction
Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007 at 8:27 amIn my forty years of life I have had four musical loves — all with women at the microphone:
- Blondie
- Eurythmics
- Sam Phillips
- Aimee Mann
Today sees the release of the fourth solo album by Annie Lennox, Songs Of Mass Destruction. Notable for the fact that she didn’t use long-time producer Stephen Lipson, but instead hired Glen Ballard who helped bring Alanis Morissette’s music to the world. The album also includes a list of who’s who in “Sing”. She brought together 23 of the most famous current female voices in a choir* to help bring attention to HIV transmission between mother and child in Africa.
After a first listen, I’d say its her best album since Diva. Now here is the video for the first single, “Dark Road”. It’s a beautiful song about the way the world is heading which the images speak louder than anything I could write. Make sure you check out Annie’s rockin’ superhero costume.
*The choir is made up of ANASTACIA, ANGELIQUE KIDJO, BETH GIBBONS, BETH ORTON, BEVERLEY KNIGHT, BONNIE RAITT, CELINE DION, DIDO, FAITH HILL, FERGIE, GLADYS KNIGHT, ISOBEL CAMPBELL, JOSS STONE, K.D. LANG, KT TUNSTALL, MADONNA, MARTHA WAINWRIGHT, MELISSA ETHERIDGE, PINK, SARAH McLACHLAN, SHAKIRA, SHINGAI SHONIWA, SUGABABES.

First time seeing the video. Really cool.
I wonder what her super hero power would be?

Jason: To avoid getting inducted into the Rock ‘N Roll Hall Of Fame. Oh, wait, that’s just me being bitter that Eurythmics didn’t make the cut this time around.
BD: Right on, dawg.

I’m glad someone I knew listened to it. I’ve been a long time Eurythmics fan, and dug some of her solo work. I saw this album starting to float up in my daily browsing and wanted to know if it was any good.
I now have an answer! I’ll have to check it out soon.

I’m still soaking this one in, but if it is anything like her previous releases, I’m going to love it. I’ve been a fan forever. The first time I walked into a gay bar, Sweet Dreams had just come out (like me) and was the first (prophetic) sound that I heard.

That’s quite a choir. Annie Lennox is always interesting.

She is astonishingly brilliant.

Oh, Howard. I have nuthin’ but respect for you, but if you and I were to take a road trip together, I fear one of us would wind up hitching most of the way after “Our Little CD Player Tiff.”

Love it. Makes Bossy want to dive head first into a bottle of Peroxide.

Dr.: After a few more listens, it’s started to come through. There are a couple of songs I’m not sure about, but many that I really do like.
Godwhacker: Ahhh, the good one days of Eurythmics. So many memories.
Diesel: You only like the choir coz there so many hotties in it. Admit it!
Hermit: That’s quite the testimonial.
Frogster: Hahahaha. There has to be SOMETHING we both like.
Bossy: You could always go old school and break out the orange.

Wow. That was quite potent. Left me quiet for a few minutes with nothing but my thoughts.., trust me.., you’d of been glad not to be there. When I think, smoke fills the room and have to change the oil when its done. NOT a pretty sight.

I could smell it all the way over here.

I’m loving this album right now. The extra live and commentary tracks are very cool as well. And yes, it’s her best since ‘Diva’. Actually, I love ‘Bare’ but it’s very depressing and the songs that were singles work better in not making you want to reach for the pills and alcohol and farewell note by having dance mixes. x
