One Off
Friday, September 14th, 2007 at 8:54 amBig Daddy over at Bon Jour, Pee Wee (It’s ‘Pee-wee’. Gaaa. That is if he his referring to Pee-wee Herman) asked what the hell the ‘^’ symbol is for over the 6 on your keyboard in this post. My response:
It’s a helmet for retarded umlauts.
Hope everyone has a great weekend!

I always wear my goggles. And my helmet.
Would you believe that Satan opens a chain of restaurants in the novel I’m writing? I hope that show gets canceled, or people are going to think that I stole the idea.

It’s called a carrot!
September 14th, 2007 at 10:23 am
Diesel: No way! That’s funny, but since you disclaimed it here, everyone will realize that you did it first.
Steve: But what is it used for other than character code strings for modems that no one uses anymore?
September 14th, 2007 at 10:34 am
Diesel- I assume the restaurants serve really spicy food. I like spicy food.
Howard- The “carrot” (according to Steve) is an essential ingredient in making emoticons. We couldn’t take it off the keyboard if we want people to keep sending us “the REALLY happy smiley face!”
September 14th, 2007 at 10:48 am
Emoticons on Paxil maybe.

Actually it’s called a “caret” and it’s used in mathematics to represent a square, cube, or other power. It’s also used to represent a half step in music. The third usage is as you pointed out; “It’s a helmet for retarded umlauts”.
September 14th, 2007 at 11:25 am
Oh, cool! I wish I had stayed in school and learned that.
September 14th, 2007 at 11:49 am
Well, you knew the most important usage. I’d say good enough.

And knowing is half the battle. The other half is convincing the public that there has been progress.

GI JOE! (Yo Joe!)
I remember the after-school special on carets….
September 14th, 2007 at 1:35 pm
Yes! The caret was a loner that everyone hated until it met a coach or teacher or some mentor-type, learned to like itself and then told all the haters off and finished high school happy.
FAIRY TALE!

Scott: Duh, it’s the things that come out of sci-fi laser guns from the 50’s.
Jason: No, that’s not crazy. This is crazy: I full support our government’s foreign policy with no questions asked.
Da Duck: It happens to the best of us.

Yep, that Pee Wee.
One night, while drunk, a friend and I couldn’t figure out how to turn off the French audio track while watching ‘Big Adventure’ on DVD.
It stuck.
