They Keep On Turnin’ In Your Mind
Friday, March 9th, 2007 at 12:42 amRecently a strange feeling had come over me — a longing for something missing in my life that hadn’t been there for a while, but just what was it that was causing this nostalgia. My mind kept taunting me, “You want to know the secret?”. I kept trying to work it out, but there was no reply. I should have known better because the search through my archives was getting nowhere, man.
Okay, I’ll stop with the puns. Back in the early 1980’s, the drummer from Golden Earring decided to make legal a bootleg dance mix of 60’s and 70’s original hits. There was no way he was going to be able to legally use the original versions so he hired a bunch of his fellow Dutch countrymen to imitate the vocals including three who sound just like John, Paul and George and started the medley craze of the 80’s. (Additional trivia: one of the guys from Electric Light Orchestra started “Hooked On Classics”.)
Wanna know what kind of music geek I am? I remember “Stars On 45 Medley” hitting #1 in the US for one week and then I thought, “Wasn’t that the song the interrupted ‘Bette Davis Eyes’ right in the middle of its nine week run at #1?” Turns out that I was right. I don’t know which is scarier — knowing that piece of trivia or my desire to hunt down this song again. Here it is for your listening pleasure. Or punishment.

P.S. In my search, I found a techno version of the Stars On 45 theme (the beginning and end parts) on iTunes. It’s hilariously bad. Yes, I did buy it.
P.S.S. When I finally did get a CD copy of The Very Best Of Stars On 45 there was a warning printed on it: “will not play on PC/MAC“. I couldn’t figure out if it was because of Digital Right Management or because the computer would just reject the music on principle. (BTW, it played fine on both PC/MAC.)

This perked up Buckaroo’s ears. I was in grade school, he was in high school when this came out.

Kevin:
I know! Isn’t it, like, totally tubular / gnarly?
Scott:
Wow, I thought you were both my age (no offense!) I was in the middle in Junior High. (I had to check my school picture post to verify that)

I’m 37 and he’s… uh… well, let’s just say he’s 8 years older than me and that way I won’t get in trouble for telling you his age.

Ahh, so we are close in age. Cool. And I won’t tell him you said anything if you don’t.

Is that one of the ones that you imported off of vinyl from my turntable?
March 11th, 2007 at 7:59 pm

Oh NICE!! Stars on 45 lives on [well, to our ears anyway! ha!]! I only have the few tracks; the Abba Medley, the 16+ mins Beatles medley, the album version and the regular medley. Love them all.
I’ll have to listen to the new techno version. Scary, but I want to! heh! So much good f**kin’ music from the 80’s! *sigh*
