Real-Time Halloween Night Report

Tuesday, October 31st, 2006 at 6:03 pm

Okay, I’m upstairs and put lights up and have the Halloween Atmosphere Mix going in a secret place in the yard and now will give you a report of what the kids are wearing tonight.   Okay, I’m having fun with this.

5:25 - Our first kid dressed as an Air Force pilot.  He was 4 or something.  So cute!

5:43 - The grim reaper showed up at the door with — get this — a kid dressed as a Curious George book.  That’s right his arms were the open pages of a book and had his candy bad hanging from his neck.  I had to put candy in his bag for him since he couldn’t move his arms.  I think we already have a best costume of the night.

5:55 - Two more kids showed up.  One dressed as some Stevie Nick’s looking thing and the other as Thing 1.  Or 2.  I couldn’t see the number.

6:22 - Pooh Bear just showed up and only wanted one piece of candy.  The three adults that were with him all laughed when I told Pooh that I had a second piece of candy and that I was being generous tonight.  They had to prompt him to say ‘trick or treat’, too.  So cute!

6:31 - Just had the killer from the Scream movies, a funky brother, a bloody skull and a sassy mama.  The best thing? As I’m giving them Snickers and M&M’s (we don’t skimp here), one of them said, "Ooo, he’s got the good stuff!"

6:38 - Just had Superman and Spider-man asking for candy.  Spider-man wanted to rush in and play with Sydney and Roo.  It was pretty funny.

6:59 - Spider-man came back! Only this time he had foam muscles and had a gruff voice like he’d been drinking whiskey all night.

7:01 - Two Power Rangers (are they still hip?) and a… uh, I guess she was dressed as a sister since she was watching over the other two, but wanted candy, too.

7:17 - HAHAHA!  Just had two girls dressed as awkward, geeky girls trying to be pretty and princess-like.  Cracked me up!

7:52 - Wow, the big kids are out.  Had 5 mid-teen kids show up.  The good thing about coming this late is that we still have tons of candy so you get more now.

8:48 - It’s time to wrap up.  Hope everyone had a safe Halloween.

    Awesome!!!

We’re having a minor (coldascrapoutthere) lull, so I will tell you my favorite on our street:

A group of little kids and one bigger kid (probably 10?) in a monster mask. He leans in, gets about an inch from my face and says, “I’m really a monkey”.

    Slayed me.

Last year when I was a good neighbor and passed out candy, we actually had more tweeners than we did little kids!!! I trick or treated until I was 16, being from a small town it was kind of a given and great!!! So I try to give them all candy :) If you drive up to the house yourself though…..you are a little to old :)

Matt tried to call you to tell you to give out 2 pieces to the kids dressed as Spidermen. But I guess its a little late for that now. I wish I didn’t live in an apartment building on Halloween :( Next year can I come to your house?

I opted to stay home tonight until I can hire my own ‘handler’ … but I so enjoyed your play-by-play! Next year, I’m a-coming to your place!

I could have sworn I left a comment here earlier today. Anyway, a party to hand out candy. Interesting. I’m just surprised that this post got this many comments. :)

When I was handing out candy I had a princess that was shocked to find out that I was white underneath my makeup! It was funny.

Oh, what a difference an ocean makes. Over here, Halloween started to crib from our US cousins back in the 80s as before we didn’t see much of this kind of celebration though pagans did and continue to celebrate it as Samhain. Now trick and treating is well established but this year the police were out in force looking to arrest kids for ‘anti-social behaviour’ - when just a few become a nuisance by throwing eggs at cars, trashing gardens or playing knock-a-door-run and upsetting senior citizens.

And here in the countryside, we had a bucket full of chocolate bars ready. But no kids came round, although a few pumpkin lanterns were in evidence outside various houses. We were a tad disappointed. Maybe next year we should get the cows and sheep interested in dressing up. They could do centaurs, unicorns and minotaurs, perhaps, with a bit of glue and some stick-on horns… :-) x
