Roundup – Week of July 15
Saturday, July 22nd, 2006 at 9:04 amThe weekly collection of interesting reads from around the blogosphere.
Jimbo had some very funny code names and definitions for the typical people he sees out.
Darren Hayes came out this week by telling everyone that he was married… to a man. My friend Hayes posted about at qPlog as did Shan at Blurbology.
Heather has done another great write-up on Cliz Biz (I just love her writing style — stinging & funny). This time about Wal-Mart. I love her analogy about the large group of angry women.
The fighting in Israel? Turns out it’s we gays’ fault. Pam’s House Blend has the story.
Good Morning Silcon Valley tells us that anti-virus program you have running constantly on your computer? 80% Useless. Rhetorical question: What kind of power trip are virus writers on?
Okay, enough bad news. Here is some art. On John Sadowski’s site there is a picture of a gallery of beautifully folded plates.
This is damn cool. This lobster GREW this way with half of its body developing with regular pigments and the other half missing the blue. Read more about it on National Geograpic’s site.
My favorite new cartoon has won its first Emmy during the Technical Awards. "Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends" won for Individual Achievment For Outstanding Character Development. It’s also nominated for Best Animated Series against "Camp Lazlo", "The Simpsons", "Family Guy", and "South Park". Guess which "South Park" episode is nominated? That’s right. The Tom Cruise in the closet episode.
Humina-humina-humina-humina… Darren Aronofsky’s new film has its first trailer and it’s a doozy of stunning visuals and mind blowing effects.
And finally, Hubs, had a couple of fun posts this week. The first was a list of tips for beating the heat. The second is post about World Jump Day (which was Thursday) and some links to other jump inspired sites. In celebration, here are my very own jump pictures:

Those are some great jumping shots! If only I could jump that high!

Those were fun. My ex has a sports camera and had wanted to do something actiony.

Darren Hayes. What a surprise. No, really, I am shocked. *droll expression*
Hehe! If you listen to the title track of his last album, ‘The Tension and the Spark’, you can draw an interesting conclusion from the lyrics. They are actually very, um, rude and appear to be about him encountering men in either a darkroom or a sauna or some such place. ‘The one thing missing here is love’ is very poignant as lines go, and then there’s that very rude bit about being ‘like a baby sucking mama’s milk’. Of course, it could be about anything… But I’ve run the song by several other gay peeps (for comparison and to check I don’t just have a filthy mind, which I do at times, but hey) and they all agree, he’s singing about some kind of shagathon, which only confirmed what I already knew from the time Savage Garden did ‘Affirmation’. Well done to him for coming out. x

Wow, a pop song about a bath house? Excellent! I’ll run this comment by Hayes. He’s a big Darren fan. No, my friend Hayes is a fan of Darren Hayes. Nevermind.

Yeah, see what he’s got to say. If you listen very carefully to that one, I’m convinced it’s about him heading out for a steamy sesh… Forgot you call them bath houses. We call ‘em saunas, whether sex or ‘legit’ (sex saunas are not officially legit but kind of ignored for now… until new EU legislation kicks in which requires all saunas to be open to male AND female, which will kill the gay saunas in a day unless they don’t mind being watched by women – and there are those who’d like to watch, as I recall female friends from my uni days asking to borrow porn).
You also talk washrooms, don’t you, where we talk loos, bogs, or simply toilets. We also talk of spending a penny, which I’ve never understood as you never used to have to pay for public loo usage until a few decades ago! I love the differences of language and the misunderstandings which can result from them sometimes.
Every time I head back here and see those three photos, I laugh. Out loud. Lots and lots. I’m glad I’m a country queer now; if I were still living in London, some remote and never-spoken-to neighbour would have called in the men in white coats by now… x

And didn’t some classic gay-appeal divas start off their careers in bath houses? Bette Midler did, I know. I’ve heard Manilow did, too, so they must be different to the UK ones where I recall (I must say, for no specific reason, this was in my single days) make use of tinny radios.
There are some situations you just shouldn’t play ‘Victims’ by Culture Club, that’s all I will say. :-)

You know, I still don’t have his last album… Just the single. I don’t know if it got a US release, and it didn’t make it to iTunes, so I will have to look for it. And then I will see what I can make of the song.
