The Summer Single
Wednesday, June 21st, 2006 at 1:10 pmAs part of my court-ordered public service, I must occasionally talked about music. (The court being my friends, of course.) May I introduce to you — Corinne Bailey Rae. This 27-year-old British beauty first entered the music scene with the band, Helen, which was inspired by the likes of L7 and Veruca Salt.
Thankfully, for the Summer Of 2006, that band called it quits and Ms. Rae found herself writing music for an album that would eventually be released in the UK earlier this year and yesterday washed up on our shores. The girl has a classic voice and classic sound. She helps to remind what good old-fashion soul music used to be — passionate, fun, melodic and groovy.
To that point, The Web Pen would like to nominate the smooth, sultry, laid-back, sitting-on-the-veranda-sipping-your-mint-julep sounds of "Put Your Records On" as the Summer Single Of The Year. Give it a listen (iTunes / WM). You can’t help but sway back and forth to the sweltering beat. When the chorus hits with an angelic choir of Ms. Rae’s vocals singing in harmony, yells and whoops, I dare you to try and not smile while remembering the good, innocent days of yesteryear.
Those who tear up at Folger’s commercials are warned. Yes, it’s that happy. Without the sap though.
Listening to: Put Your Records On – Corinne Bailey Rae (well, duh. What do you think I’d be listening to when doing this write up?)
UPDATE: Further proof that Rolling Stone doesn’t have it’s finger on the pulse — Over a month after The Web Pen recommends "Put Your Records On" as the summer single, the magazine puts it on its Must-Hear list. The rest of us have moved on.

Ok, I liked it! I bought it! Now, what are “records”? Are those the big black CDs with tiny holes in the middle?
Thanks for the recommendation…..And I second the nomination to Summer Single of the Year!

PS: I tried responding to your kind email, but have gotten “time out” errors at both your MU and your webpen email addresses….
The fire seems to be calming down, but isn’t contained yet…

Yes, I’ve been having problems with my email of late and when I told my hosting company about them, they said I should send test emails to myself. I kindly told them the call wasn’t coming from within the house and it would be hard for me to track emails that I am missing that are coming from other people.
They haven’t responded.

They probably emailed your response to you. And it probably bounced or timed out. Sigh.

I actually seem to be getting some of my lost email. You should try emailing me again.
