Animated Spin
Friday, January 27th, 2006No, not the Tasmanian Devil! Geez! There was a story on imdb.com this morning about Disney scrapping their Toy Story 3 plans (read the article). I love spin. The article says “Pixar and Disney” decided to stop production. Suspicious timing? You bet!
Announced three days after Disney buys Pixar, gives Steve Jobs enough shares to make him the largest individual owner of stock and puts him on the board of directors, places Pixar president Ed Catmull as Disney’s animation president, and puts Pixar director John Lasseter in the role of chief creative officer of Disney Animation and adviser for new attractions at Disney’s theme parks, the decision seems far less collabrative than the announcement leads you to believe.
Up until the merger talks began there was a huge riff between the two companies with Disney seeming to thumb their nose at Pixar by starting production of a third Toy Story movie because, contractually, they could. Pixar seemed upset about this and rightly so. Disney’s quality of animated film had been lessened of late, but, now that Pixar has key people in Disney’s animation department, suddenly Toy Story 3 is axed.
That’s about as surprising as someone being murdered whenever Jessica Fletcher shows up.
